The prophet Zechariah wrote beginning 500 years before Christ. The Holy Spirit spoke through him as he was living with the Jews in captivity in Babylon. Zechariah was seeing prophecy and judgment played out in his lifetime. He had read the writings of the prophet Jeremiah and Isaiah and knew that God had promised far in advance to punish the Jewish nation for its rebellion and disobedience. He knew that God had told them in advance that He would ban them to a foreign land for a certain period of time. What God had said was coming true during Zechariah’s life. As Zechariah wrote by the power of the Holy Spirit, God prophesied the coming of the Messiah and the salvation of the world. Zechariah knew what he was writing was true and would come to pass.
